Construction of Turrnel Started- Getting from Tbilisi to Kazbegi in 1.5 Hours
Construction of the 9 km Kvesheti-Kobi tunnel has started, which will make it 1.5 hours to get from Tbilisi to Kazbegi.
According to the Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili, this is the project of the century, because the road is closed for about 100 days a year and the population can not move. This project is important for the country and the population, as well as for the region as a whole.
According to the Prime Minister, about 3-4 thousand vehicles travel on the road during the day, of which 70% are light and the rest are trucks.
"This will completely unload this section and we will be able to arrive from Tbilisi to Kazbegi in about 1.5 hours, after the Zhinvali-Natakhtari section is completed. It is the largest tunnel in the whole Caucasus, its length is 9 kilometers and is unique in the world in terms of its parameters. The project will cost 1.2 billion. I would like to thank our donor organizations, the Asian Development Bank and the construction company that is carrying out a very high level of work. Thanks to Mr. Irakli Karseladze and his team. Gudauri bypass road will be built and it will be possible to get to Gudauri from Tbilisi in 1 hour. This will unload Gudauri and turn it into a modern European-type resort, ”said the Prime Minister.
The total cost of the Kvesheti-Kobi new road project is 1.2 billion GEL. The construction is carried out by the Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia with the financial support of the Asian Development Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (ADB, EBRD). The project is scheduled for completion in 2024. In addition, a 5 km access road to Gudauri and a tourist center will be built, which will make it safe and comfortable to move around and increase the tourism potential of the region.
