“Our Goal Is to Ensure a Coordinated Process and Gradually Improve Waste Management Infrastructure”
Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Davit Songulashvili held a working meeting with State Representative in Kakheti Platon Kalmakhelidze and municipal mayors to discuss the condition of the region’s landfills and the development of waste management infrastructure.
The meeting focused on plans to rehabilitate existing landfills, establish a new regional waste disposal facility and develop waste management infrastructure.
“Improving waste management infrastructure and creating a system that meets modern standards is a key priority of our environmental policy. The gradual rehabilitation of existing landfills in the regions and the establishment of new facilities that meet modern standards are particularly important in this process. At today’s meeting with representatives of Kakheti’s municipalities, we discussed both the rehabilitation of existing landfills and the development of new regional facilities. Our goal is to ensure a coordinated process and gradually improve waste management infrastructure,” said Davit Songulashvili.
Four of Kakheti’s five operating landfills—Dedoplistskaro, Telavi, Sagarejo and Lagodekhi—are scheduled for rehabilitation. Procurement procedures for rehabilitation work at the Sagarejo and Telavi landfills have already begun, while the relevant documentation is being prepared for the Dedoplistskaro and Lagodekhi sites.
The minister and municipal representatives also discussed establishing a new regional waste disposal facility in Sagarejo Municipality. A site has already been selected and is currently being assessed by the Solid Waste Management Company’s technical department.
The meeting, held at the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, was also attended by Deputy Ministers Solomon Pavliashvili and Giorgi Tskrialashvili, and Mikheil Gogolidze, Director of the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia.
