Georgian Government Approves New Regulation on the Registration of Fresh Drinking Water Wells
A new regulation on the state registration of wells used to extract fresh drinking water from underground sources entered into force on 1 September. It was developed at the initiative of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, with the involvement of the National Environmental Agency.
Approved by Georgian Government Decree No. 424, the regulation establishes procedures for the state registration of these wells.
The decree is one of the key legislative instruments developed to implement Georgia’s Law on Water Resources Management. The regulation aims to ensure the systematic collection of data and the creation of an information database needed for the sustainable management of underground fresh drinking water resources.
The introduction of the new rules marks an important step towards protecting and sustainably managing these resources. The data collected will support monitoring of the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of water bodies, assessment of their current condition and the development of appropriate recommendations.
Under the decree, the National Environmental Agency’s Geology Department will carry out the state registration of wells. The information collected will be used to create a hydrogeological database, which will be updated periodically.
