Prime Minster: We Have Defeated Asian Marmorated Stinkbug in Georgia
Georgia has overcome the problems with Asian marmorated stinkbug, Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia noted when delivering his speech at the Parliament of Georgia on June 26.
Georgia’s achievements have been recognized by internalization organizations and the Agriculture Ministry staff deserves our deep gratitude for their great job, the Prime Minister noted.
“Today we can confirm that Georgia has resolved the problem with Asian marmorated stinkbug. This is confirmed by international assessments too and FAO has named Georgia as one of the leading countries in fighting against Asian marmorated stinkbug. Furthermore, our specialists are invited to various countries to resolve the problem there”, Giorgi Gakharia noted.
As reported, Asian marmorated stinkbug and various fungal disease infected filbert plantations in 2016. As a result, Georgian hazelnut lost export potential. As noted by Gela Khanishvili, deputy Agriculture Minister, the state budget has spent more than 100 million GEL on Asian marmorated stinkbug elimination programs.
