Levan Mekhuzla: Achieving 17% Sugar Content Is Not a Problem for Vineyards Planted in the Appropriate Viticultural Zone

Chairman of the National Wine Agency Levan Mekhuzla spoke about preparations for the 2026 grape harvest (Rtveli) and the government support mechanisms available to grape growers. According to him, the differentiated purchase prices set by the state will encourage the production of higher-quality grapes.

"Price differentiation gives grape growers a strong incentive to produce quality grapes. In Georgia, if a vineyard is planted in the appropriate viticultural zone and is properly managed, achieving 17% sugar content should not be a problem. If this level is not reached, the reason is usually a violation of proper agricultural practices—such as excessive irrigation, overuse of pesticides and fertilizers, or planting vineyards in areas that are not recommended for viticulture, for example in river valleys or high-altitude zones," said Levan Mekhuzla.

Under a decision by the Government of Georgia, in the event of a surplus harvest, the state-owned Harvest Management Company Ltd. will purchase grapes from growers at differentiated prices.
