Prime Minister: We should not Expect as Many Tourists in 2020 as in 2019

We should nor expect as many tourists in 2020 as in 2019, Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia noted when visiting Kakheti Region to meet the tourism industry representatives.

As soon as the world community defeats the pandemic, nobody will remember that Georgia has successfully withstood the virus, he added.

“We say that Georgia should use this pandemic as a good opportunity. We plan to announce Kakheti and several other regions as COVID-free zones. This will not be difficult despite many regulations. It is not enough to say Georgia is valuably fighting against COVID-19. As soon as the world community defeats the pandemic, everybody will forget this success. We should manage to re-ignite economy too.

After defeat the pandemic, the world will be different, the competition will sharpen further and we should meet this competition prepared. We should realize that we will have to co-exist with the virus for a certain while. We should enhance our competitive advantage, as a tourism country. We should not expect as many tourists in 2020 as in 2019, but we should wrap our traditions, winemaking, culture in our success against the virus. Simultaneously, we should restart economy – this is our objective and the Authorities cannot achieve this goal alone”, Giorgi Gakharia noted.

It is reasonable that tourism industry recovery will start from regions, the Prime Minister pointed out.
