Leading Travel Destinatinations for Georgian Tourists
Georgian residents' overseas visits resumed dramatically when travel restrictions were eased, reaching over half of the pre-pandemic levels in the first quarter of 2022. This number is 55 % less than in the first quarter of 2019.
According to the PMCG study, in the first quarter of 2022, compared to the first quarter of 2021, the number of visits by Georgian residents abroad increased by 274%.
However, according to the authors of the study, the main destination for visitors was Turkey, followed by Russia, Armenia, and EU countries.
"The main destinations of the visits turned out to be similar to the pre-pandemic data. In the first quarter of 2022, a significant proportion of visitors chose Turkey (46%) as their destination, followed by Russia (12%), Armenia (12%), and the European Union (12%).
In the first quarter of 2022, the share of visits to Azerbaijan decreased significantly (it dropped to 1% when it was 23% in the first quarter of 2019), which is explained by the fact that Azerbaijan maintains strict restrictions on land traffic," - the study reads.
At the same time, according to the PMCG study, the expenditure of Georgian visitors abroad in the first quarter of 2022 reached 285 million GEL, which is 14% less than in the first quarter of 2020 and 21% less than in the first quarter of 2019.
