Georgia Plans Modern Hazardous Waste Facility as Yalguzhi Site Assessed
Director of the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia Mikheil Gogoladze, together with State Representative of Kvemo Kartli Ilia Jalaghania and Mayor of Marneuli Dauri Ismailov, conducted an on-site assessment of the current condition of the historical hazardous waste burial site in Yalguzhi and discussed issues related to its future management and safety.
The Yalguzhi hazardous waste burial site, covering an area of 40,000 square meters, is a former storage facility for agrochemicals and pesticides. It was closed in 1985, however, the existing infrastructure requires rehabilitation in line with international standards, as well as safe closure, continuous monitoring, and maintenance.
The Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia is responsible for planning and implementing the necessary technical measures, including ensuring that the rehabilitation and closure process meets international standards.
At the same time, plans are underway to construct a new, modern hazardous waste disposal facility in Georgia. According to a Government of Georgia decree, the project has been assigned to the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, with the Solid Waste Management Company designated as the implementing body.
The project aims to develop a modern hazardous waste management system in the country, strengthen environmental safety, and ensure compliance with international standards.
