Farmers Must Sign Water Use Agreements to Ensure Proper Irrigation Management, Says Georgian Melioration Head

At a working meeting held at the Shida Kartli Regional Administration, Gigla Tamazashvili, General Director of Georgian Melioration LLC, and Simon Guledani, State Representative in Shida Kartli, discussed the status of regional irrigation systems, the progress of the ongoing irrigation season, and current infrastructure needs.

The meeting also included the commercial and technical directors of Georgian Melioration and the mayors of all four municipalities in the region. Projects already implemented and those currently underway were evaluated by municipality.

Tamazashvili stressed the importance of engaging local self-government bodies in the planning of melioration projects and emphasized that future work would be aligned with regional priorities and proposals. A key issue discussed was the necessity for farmers to sign water use agreements with Georgian Melioration.

“In order to use irrigation water in accordance with the established procedures, farmers must sign a water use agreement with Georgian Melioration,” said Tamazashvili.
“This is essential for the effective use, proper management, and fair distribution of existing water resources.”

Currently, six rehabilitation projects on melioration infrastructure are being carried out in Shida Kartli, in parallel with the irrigation season. Once completed, these efforts will improve water supply to 11,870 hectares of farmland, significantly enhancing agricultural productivity in the region.
