Delegation from Spain’s Rioja Institute of Vine and Wine Sciences Visits Jighaura Research Base

A 25-member delegation from the Rioja Institute of Vine and Wine Sciences (ICVV) in Spain visited the Jighaura base of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture of Georgia. The delegation was led by Professor José M. Martínez Zapater and included professionals from the viticulture and winemaking sectors—viticulturists, oenologists, researchers, consultants, as well as experts in phytosanitary fields.

The guests were welcomed by Professor Levan Ujmajuridze, Director of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture, who introduced them to the center’s main scientific and practical areas of work. The delegation toured the grapevine variety collection, as well as the museum space dedicated to Georgian grapevine and wine heritage.

The two sides exchanged information on various research projects, including the unique genetic resources of Georgian grape varieties, modern approaches to the production of certified planting material, climate adaptation strategies, and integrated and organic pest and disease management practices.

As part of the visit, a wine tasting was held, led by David Chichua, Head of the Viticulture and Winemaking Research Department. The guests had the opportunity to taste rare Georgian grape wines produced by the center and to learn in detail about the traditional Qvevri winemaking and aging methods.

The visit served as a valuable platform for knowledge exchange and practical collaboration, laying the groundwork for future professional cooperation between the Georgian and Spanish sides.
