National Wine Day Concludes with Gala Evening Celebrating 8,000 Years of Georgian Winemaking
National Wine Day celebrations concluded with a gala reception and a musical-theatrical performance at the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre dedicated to the 8,000-year history of Georgian winemaking.
The performance symbolically brought together themes of the birth of wine, the flowering of the vine, and the development of Georgian wine culture, highlighting the uninterrupted historical continuity of Georgia’s winemaking tradition.
“Once again, I would like to congratulate Georgia on National Wine Day. This is a particularly important day because wine is an inseparable part of the Georgian way of life and culture. Today has given us another opportunity to speak about wine and to emphasize that wine is Georgian.
National Wine Day concludes with the final event, ‘The Birth of Wine,’ held at the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre, dedicated to the 8,000-year history of Georgian wine and its unique cultural significance,” said Davit Songulashvili, Georgia’s Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture.
To promote Georgian wine culture and the country’s centuries-old winemaking traditions, the Government of Georgia, upon the initiative of the National Wine Agency under the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, officially designated May 8 as National Wine Day. The new commemorative date aims to highlight the significance of one of Georgia’s most important cultural heritages—Georgian wine—and further strengthen its international recognition.
As part of the National Wine Day program, an international scientific conference was also held in Tbilisi, bringing together representatives of the wine industry, researchers, and international experts to discuss the future of the global wine sector and Georgia’s role as the birthplace of wine.
In parallel, Gudiashvili Square hosted a wine exhibition and tasting featuring Georgian wine producers, wineries, and wine bars. Visitors had the opportunity to discover and taste a diverse selection of wines from different regions of Georgia, showcasing the richness and variety of the country’s winemaking heritage.
