Levan Ujmajuridze: "Bringing Unique Georgian Grape Varieties Back into Practice Means Stable Development for the Sector"

"Restoring each unique variety of Georgian grapevine, preserving and utilizing genetic resources not only safeguards our cultural heritage but also serves to diversify wine production, increase exports, and boost the economic activity of our regions," – stated Levan Ujmajuridze, Director of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture, during a wine tasting held at the historic Wine Factory’s wine bar, Sadzvele.

The event aimed to introduce the public to rare Georgian grape varieties preserved in the Jighaura collection vineyard, showcasing the viticultural potential of different regions across the country. The tasting featured 12 wines made from local red and white grape varieties. Their enological characteristics and distribution potential were presented to the audience by Davit Chichua, Head of the Viticulture and Winemaking Research Department.

Levan Ujmajuridze also provided an overview of the Scientific-Research Center's ongoing projects aimed at identifying, restoring, selecting, and preserving Georgian grape varieties, and integrating them into modern production based on scientific and practical studies.

The event, attended by Georgian and international wine experts and enthusiasts, continued in a Q&A format and featured an engaging discussion on the topic.

The Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture plans to continue organizing such events regularly.
