“IWSC Georgia Competition Shows Significant Progress in Quality and Diversity” – British publication The Buyer

The International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) has been held in Georgia since 2022. The official partner of the competition is the Gurjaani Wine Festival, with support from Georgia’s National Wine Agency.

In 2025, the competition took place in the city of Batumi and was chaired by IWSC committee member and Master of Wine Sarah Abbott.

“The results of this year’s IWSC Georgia wine and spirits competition clearly demonstrate just how far and how quickly the country has progressed in recent years, both in terms of wine quality and the diversity and scale of its winemaking,” notes the influential British publication The Buyer. The article, written by wine writer Sunny Hodge, reviews the outcomes of IWSC Georgia 2025.

Sunny Hodge is one of the UK’s leading wine specialists and was among the international judges who assessed the wines alongside local experts. He is the founder of London wine bars Diogenes the Dog and Aspen & Meursault. His book on wine science, The Cynic’s Guide to Wine, was published in April 2025.

“Georgia represents a crossroads of worlds – positioned between Europe and Asia, with a cuisine and wine culture that combines the finest elements of both Old and New World traditions,” the article states.
