New Reserved Area of Pontine Oak Wood Created in Georgia

A new reserve area that has unique Pontine Oak trees has been added to the list of protected areas in Georgia.

The Pontine Oak reserve is located in Chokhatauri Municipality, in the Georgian region of Guria. It covers 443 hectares.

The  Pontine Oakwood is put on the Red List.

The bill on the new protected area was developed by the Ministry of Environment Protection of Georgia, the Agency of Protected Areas and the World Wild Fund (WWF) Caucasus office.

The Environmental Protection Agency reports the reserve has been created to preserve the unique forest and ecosystem of Georgia.

As of now, there are 20 reserves in Georgia. Their total area is 60,300 hectares.
