National Parks of Georgia Share Key Achievements for 2020 and Plans for 2021

Despite the pandemic, protected areas in Georgia are being expanded continuously, important projects have been implemented in the field of biodiversity monitoring, infrastructure and ecotourism development and the introduction of modern technologies.

In 2020, the area of protected areas increased by 122 374 hectares and today it reports 793 351 hectares. 3 new protected areas were created and one was expanded. In 2021, the area of protected areas is planned to be increased by at least 100 000 hectares, 4 new protected areas will be established and one will be expanded.

In the following year, for the first time in the history of protected areas of Georgia, like the protected areas of Europe and the United States, a new system and technologies will be introduced, which will enable rangers to carry out SMART monitoring and patrolling, which will ensure even more effective law enforcement.

In 2020, about 30 ecotourism projects were implemented in the protected areas of Georgia; infrastructure was arranged and renewed at 18 protected areas. The network of up to 200 km of hiking trails were built, ecotourism attraction “Adventurous Rope Park” was arranged in Kolkheti National Park. Infrastructure, including repair/rehabilitation of visitor centers, was carried out at 7 protected areas, rangers cottages were renovated at 4 protected areas, administrations were equipped with information, interpretation, demarcation, prohibition, direction signs, warning and various thematic boards.
