Following the restoration of Georgia's state independence in the early 1990s, work began on creating the first full-fledged national currency alongside monetary and credit reforms, culminating in the introduction of the Lari in 1995. The word "Lari" is an old Georgian term meaning treasure or property, and "Tetri," which is one-hundredth of a Lari, is also an ancient Georgian monetary term.
On September 25, 1995, banknotes and coins of the national currency "Lari" were put into circulation, and on October 2 of the same year, the Lari was declared the sole legal tender throughout the country.
The introduction of the Lari was a significant step in the history of our country, marking the formation of a state governed by the principles of a market economy, politically and economically independent.
