Why Not Gallery Holds 'Mosaics of the Soviet Period' - Conversation with Sopho Lapiashvili

The Why Not Gallery holds a conversation with Sopho Lapiashvili - ‘Mosaics of the Soviet Period’.

From the beginning of the 2000s, active gentrification began in Tbilisi, which was followed by facade beautification, banning of Soviet symbols, destruction of the authentic urban fabric. The ignorance and lack of analysis of the Soviet past led to the loss of the authentic face of Tbilisi and the dismantling/remodeling of many valuable architectural monuments or public spaces, including Soviet mosaics.

Sopho Lapiashvili was one of the first researchers, a member of the GeoAIR team, to study, popularise, and rethink Soviet-era mosaics.

"We will talk about the specifics of the Soviet monumental mosaic in Tbilisi, the technique of execution, their radically different fate, and current trends.", announces Why Not Gallery.

The event will be held under the new COVID 19 regulations. Only 12 people will be allowed in the gallery space, therefore, one can book their place by email: hi@thewhynotgallery.com
