NASA Space Apps Challenge 2020 was held from 2 to 4 October in Tbilisi. 70 participants of the Hackathon, who were united in 17 teams, worked on global challenges during 48 hours, as well as listened to the lectures from professionals in this field.
A special jury revealed two winning teams on October 4th. The first place was occupied by the team of Ilia State University - Fire Detector, and the second place was granted to the students of Komarovi school. Their project was called The2Degrees.
A team of Ilia State University developed a program, where AI can predict potential cases based on metrics and past experiences.
"The grid of metrics will consist of the following components: Air humidity, Forest area, Season, Weekday, Temperature, Potential tourist route, etc. For future development aircraft cameras can detect infrared waves and transmit alarms when they collide with fire waves. At this time the satellites may concentrate and begin monitoring a specific area As well as do Economic and environmental damage assessment as analytics and report posted on the website. AI takes information from the different data source and shows result, where is a higher potential of fire.", the summary of their project "Fire Detector" reads.
The winning team of the Hackathon was awarded 2000 GEL gift voucher from Beeline, Ilia State University gave each of the team members a 500 GEL scholarship voucher, and the company Edison offered them a full complex of Arduino.
The second winning team, schoolmates of Komarovi aimed to develop a tool for assessment of regional CO2 emission statistics.
"Using this tool we have split Georgia's total national GHG emissions up and calculated the emissions of each individual Region of the country. The tool functions by splitting national emission statistics into in accordance with different regional statistics, data gathered from independent studies and NASA satellite imagery.", their project description reads.
Edison also gave them a full complex of Arduino. The2Degrees were awarded 1000 GEL gift voucher from Hub for Regional Development.
