Gletschermusik II - Series of Concerts in Georgia
The glacier music project of the Goethe-Institut Tbilisi and Goethe-Zentrum Yerevan uses the sounds and mighty images of melting glaciers as a source of inspiration for concerts, video and sound installations.
The project aims to promote active dialogue between science and art and to raise awareness about man-made environmental destruction. The project began in Central Asia in 2013 with an expedition to the Grand Tian Shan mountain range: at an altitude of 3500 meters highly sensitive microphones were positioned in the crevasses of the Tujusku glacier (near Almaty) to capture the sound of the melting ice. Artists and journalists from Central Asia accompanied the expedition. Now the journey continues to Armenia and Georgia and they hope to reach music and mountain enthusiasts with the glacier concerts and corresponding CDs.
In a mountain region like the Great Caucasus, glacial streams are important sources of water for agriculture, hydroelectric power, and leisure. In addition, the glaciers of the Great Caucasus have a positive effect on Georgia's economy as an enormous tourist attraction: the regions of Svanetia, Racha and Kasbegi/Stepanzminda are the destinations of thousands of visitors every year.
Latest glacier survey in the Caucasus region state: "In order to be able to analyse glacier dynamics of the last decade in connection with climate change, scientists investigated glacier melt in 53 river basins on the northern and southern slopes of the Great Caucasus, both locally and by remote sensing. The study shows that climate change has led to a drastic retreat of ice. To confirm this fact, rephotography was applied to selected glaciers. The Gergeti Glacier has undergone major changes over the last century" (Levan Tielidse, Institute of Geography, Tbilisi State University).
In addition to Tbilisi, the concerts will take place on 28 September at Zeta Camping in Kazbegi and on 30 September on the small stage of the Lado Meskhishvili State Drama Theatre in Kutaisi at 7 pm.
Following artists are:
Anushka Chkeidze (Georgia), Eto Gelashvili (Georgia), Hayk Karoyi Karapetyan (Armenia), Robert Lippok (Germany), Lillevan (Germany)
