Exhibition of Untamed Books – Banned Books Week Starts in Georgia

From September 28 till October 2, publishing houses “Intelekti” and “Artanuji” invite you to an unique book exposition – “Exhibition of Untamed Books – Banned Books Week in Georgia”, held at the “Literature Museum” in Tbilisi. The official opening of the event takes place on September 28 at 18:00, at the exhibition hall of the literature museum (first floor).

Levan Berdzenishvili, Ani Kopaliani, Lasha Bakradze, Paata Shamugia, Zaal Chkheidze and Shorena Lebanidze will give speeches about the books exhibited at the event. The exposition presents books in Georgian or other languages from different periods of time accompanied with the stories of why they had been banned as well as the posters specially created on the topics of these books. The partner of the event is the “Literature Museum”.

“Banned Books Week” is an international event that serves as a reminder to everyone of how important it is to raise our voices against censorship. The event is organised by the “Banned Books Week” coalition and the American Library Association Office for Intellectual Freedom. This year’s theme is – “Books Unite Us – Censorship Divides Us!''.

“Banned Books Week” is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. The event was founded in 1982 in the USA. The reason for creating the event was an unexpected increase in the number of complaints against books. The event is traditionally held by the end of September and stresses on the importance of free, uncensored access to the information. “Banned Books Week” brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.

Attendance at the event on September 28 and visiting the exposition during the following days is free. The exposition is open including October 2, from 11am till 17pm, at the Literature Museum
