National Archives of Georgia opened an exhibition of Giglo Karalashvili's stereo photography within the framewrok of Kolga Tbilisi Photo, on October 26th.

The exhibition will continue until November 20th.

Giglo Karalashvili is one of the most distinguished Georgian general, singer, photographer. Preserved in the National Archives, his unique photos will be displayed publicly for the first time in more than a century.

Giorgi (Giglo) Karalashvili (1844-1924) was a military person, general, singer, photographer, one of the prominent representatives of the noble family from Artana. He, in addition to military service, was also a cultural figure: he sang, was playing a tar and took photos. Titsian Tabidze, a Georgian symbolist poet, writes in his poem "In Kakheti" about him: "Dedas Levana sings in Shilda and Karalashvili sings in Artana".
The general was a friend of famous Georgian writers: Vazha-Pshavela, Alexander Kazbegi, Ilia Chavchavadze and others. Vazha-Pshavela dedicated a poem to Giglo Karalasgvili: “To my old friend and brother Giglo Karalashvili” (1914).

After the sovietization of Georgia, in 1923-24 his family was persecuted. Later, he got sick and soon passed away.

In 1963, Giglo Karalashvili's family handed over to the National Archives of Georgia a photo collection of a military official and a prominent representative of Georgian culture, which included 770 negatives and 60 positives. The photo collection mainly includes photos taken while traveling in different European countries in 1900-1910. The general's lens also captured military holiday marches in Tbilisi, private houses, public gatherings and more. One of the characteristics of the uniqueness of his photo collection is the stereo image, which gives a special charm to the absolutely wonderful shots taken by him.

The Exhibition is supported by Tbilisi Central.
