A regular working meeting was held in the city of Gori, at the Administration of the State Representative, to discuss the selection of sites for the construction of new regional non-hazardous waste disposal facilities.
The meeting was attended by Solomon Pavliashvili, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia; Simon Guledani, State Representative in the Shida Kartli region; Aleksandre Zagashvili, State Representative in the Mtskheta–Mtianeti region; Mikheil Gogolidze, Director of the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia; and heads of municipalities of the Shida Kartli region.
It was noted during the meeting that solid waste management across the country must be based on European standards, which requires replacing existing old landfills with new regional non-hazardous waste disposal facilities.
According to the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, the introduction of European standards into the solid waste management system will play a significant role in improving environmental conditions in the country.
“Solid waste management is one of the most important areas that directly affects the country’s environmental condition. We are actively working to replace existing old landfills with international-standard waste disposal facilities as soon as possible. We are working actively and in a coordinated manner with all stakeholders, including local authorities in the regions. Public involvement and support for new projects are extremely important. Modern projects are ultimately aimed at improving the well-being of the population,” said Solomon Pavliashvili.
Currently, existing landfills in the country operate in accordance with legislation and, where necessary, undergo rehabilitation. However, the operational capacity of most of them is nearing exhaustion. Once the new regional non-hazardous waste disposal facilities become operational, the old landfills will be gradually closed.
