Vinifera/NewClim Autumn School participants visit Jighaura Scientific Base of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture
Professors, PhD candidates and Master’s students specializing in agronomy, viticulture, enology and agri-food sciences — participants of the Vinifera/NewClim Autumn School — visited the Jighaura scientific base of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture of Georgia.
The purpose of the visit was to learn about sustainable viticulture practices in Georgia, climate change adaptation strategies, and ongoing innovative research.
The guests were welcomed by the Center’s Director, Professor Levan Ujmajuridze, who introduced the main areas of activity of the Scientific-Research Center, as well as ongoing and completed projects, including research conducted in viticulture and winemaking.
“For the Center, supporting the education of young specialists and sharing practical experience with them is especially important. During the visit, the group viewed the Vine and Wine Museum space and the unique ampelographic collection, which includes both local and introduced grape varieties. They were introduced to modern approaches in vine breeding and conservation, as well as research directions aimed at studying varietal resilience and adaptation in the context of climate change,”
said Professor Levan Ujmajuridze.
A tasting session of wines made from rare Georgian grape varieties was held for the Vinifera/NewClim participants, where they learned about the characteristics of local varietal diversity and the traditional qvevri winemaking method. The tasting was led by Nikoloz Kirvalidze, Senior Specialist of the Viticulture and Winemaking Research Department.
The Vinifera/NewClim Autumn School is an international educational platform that brings together young Georgian and European researchers in the fields of viticulture and enology. The programme aims to study the impact of climate change and promote sustainable viticulture by combining traditional practices with contemporary scientific approaches.
