The Georgian Parliament has Approved the First Reading of a Contentious 'Foreign Agent' Law amid Demonstrations

A highly debated "foreign agent" law that has been condemned by critics for its potential impact on civil liberties in Georgia was passed in its first reading by the Georgian parliament. The U.S. Embassy has expressed their dismay, referring to it as a "dark day" for Georgian democracy.

The legislation was approved with a 76-13 vote, earlier than expected, with further readings expected to take place. Given the substantial margin of approval, the bill is anticipated to pass.

During the parliamentary vote, a large crowd of thousands congregated in front of the parliament building, causing significant traffic disruptions by blocking Rustaveli Avenue. The demonstrators, some of whom were heard shouting "Down with the Russian law," were met by the police, who appeared to use pepper spray on some of the protesters during the standoff.
