Tbilisi State University and Georgian Technical University to Merge
Tbilisi State University and the Georgian Technical University will be merged. The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia, Givi Mikhanadze, according to the Ministry of Education.
“The launch of an important reform in the higher education system is based on in-depth analysis, international practice, and the country’s long-term development interests. In recent months, a comparative analysis of academic programs, research directions, and infrastructure at state universities has been conducted. Based on this process and preliminary consultations with university rectors, we have made the decision to merge Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and the Georgian Technical University.
This will serve as a foundation for Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University to become a leading academic and scientific development center in the region and to significantly improve its international rankings,” Minister Givi Mikhanadze stated during a briefing held at the Ministry.
According to the Minister, in order to carry out the merger process, a temporary governance body — a “Council” — will be established by ministerial decree, and acting rectors and vice-rectors will be appointed to ensure the effective management of the reorganization process.
As part of the higher education reform, a new academic position of “Lead Professor” will also be introduced. Individuals selected for this position through a competitive process will be responsible for the strategic leadership of teaching and research activities, enhancing academic quality, and supporting the development of young academic staff.
“The reform does not envisage a reduction in academic staff. We will make every effort to retain academic personnel and ensure that their experience and knowledge are fully utilized in teaching, research, and scientific activities. A decision has been made to preserve existing positions, and student admission quotas will not be reduced.
