Road that Cuts Travel Time to Kakheti in Half- Agreements Signed with Chinese and Turkish Companies

A new 4-lane highway is planned to be built in Kakheti. The first part of the construction envisages the construction of a new road on the 35.2-kilometer section from Tbilisi to Sagarejo. It became known yesterday that the government has signed contracts with contractors on the main 31.5-kilometer section of this road.

The companies that won the international tender were revealed at the end of November. The project will be built by Chinese China Road and Bridge Corporation and Turkish consortium Gocay Insaat Taahhut ve Ticaret and Macro Construction for 463.3 million GEL.

The tender value of this section of the road was GEL 575 million and it was reduced from GEL 112 million to GEL 463 million as a result of competition from companies. A total of 9 companies participated in the tender.

"This is a road of international importance and as a result of its construction, travel time will be halved in the direction of Kakheti. As a result, 1 out of 3 lots will be built by a Georgian company," the information published by the Roads Department reads.

The construction of the project will be financed from the state budget. According to the Department of Roads, the road design work was carried out directly by Australian and American companies with the financial support of the World Bank.
