Protected Areas Agency Launches Implementation of SMART Survey, a New Function of the SMART Patrolling Monitoring System
The development of the SMART patrolling system in Georgia’s protected areas is entering a new phase with the launch of SMART Survey, which enables structured and regular biodiversity monitoring.
The pilot location for the project has been identified as Machakhela National Park, where, at the initial stage, bear monitoring will be piloted using SMART Survey. International experts will be actively involved in the process, particularly in training and capacity building for staff.
SMART patrolling has been successfully implemented in Georgia’s protected areas for several years. The SMART patrolling and monitoring system integrates data related to law enforcement activities within protected areas.
The introduction of the SMART Survey function significantly expands these capabilities. SMART Survey is a biodiversity monitoring module that allows rangers to collect precise data on biodiversity within park territories, categorized by specific species. The program enables the generation of unified reports using maps, charts, and other analytical tools.
The development of SMART patrolling and SMART Survey represents another important step toward establishing a modern, data-driven management system. In the long term, this will substantially improve the quality of monitoring and management of protected areas. The implementation of this modern system in protected areas is being carried out with the support of the Caucasus Nature Fund.
