Largest Infrastructure Project - Road Modernization Projects at Rikoti Gorge Costs 1.6 Billiion

A 180 meter-long tunnel has been cut first time ever within the scope of road modernization at Rikoti Gorge and namely at Khevi-Ubisa segment, by Khevi Village.

A 4-lane road of cement and concrete with a total length of 12.2 kilometers with 37 bridges and 20 tunnels will be built at Khevi-Ubisa segment of Rikoti Gorge within the scope of the road construction project. Out of 20 tunnels construction is in progress for 16 within the project. Construction of 18 tunnels out of the envisaged 37 is actively pursued within the project.

In addition, construction of the longest bridge in Georgia has been launched, which will have 22 pillars and will stretch out at 1320 meters. Currently, construction of 11 pillars is in full progress.

Irakli Karseladze, Head of Roads Department of Georgia briefed the Head of Government of Georgia in detail about the project and noted that construction of a road with a total length of 51.6 kilometers is planned at Rikoti Gorge, which involves 96 bridges and 53 tunnels.

Construction of the road at Rikoti Gorge is divided into 3 sections and it will gradually progress to be completed in 2022.

As noted by the Prime Minister of Georgia, it is the largest infrastructure project in the country, implementation of which has not stopped for a day irrespective of the global pandemic.

Projects implemented at Rikoti Gorge employed 5000 people in 2019. Out of them 70-80% are citizens of Georgia. Number of jobs will double after the launch of construction works at the remaining segments of the road.

Special spaces will be arranged within the road construction project at Rikoti Gorge, whereby residents of adjacent villages will be able to sell their merchandise. Such commercial squares will be arranged in Surami, Shrosha and Zerstaponi, while a Community Centre and a new kindergarten will be built in Khevi Village.

The total cost of both projects exceeds 1.6 billion GEL (732 296 478 and 901 973 206 GEL)
