Kobakhidze: Import of Psychotropic Drugs by Private Companies to Be Fully Banned
According to a new government decision, the import and sale of medications subject to special control will become the exclusive responsibility of the state. Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated that alongside this change, tighter oversight will be introduced over both the prescription and dispensing of such medications.
“Currently, private entities are allowed to import psychotropic medications into Georgia. As a result, these entities have a vested interest in artificially promoting the use of such medications. To prevent these practices, the import of psychotropic medications by private companies will be completely prohibited,” Kobakhidze said.
He added that only the state will be authorized to import and sell drugs subject to special control. Additionally, strict monitoring will be implemented for both prescription writing and the distribution of these medications.
“We will closely monitor statistics related to the use of psychotropic drugs. A significant decline in these figures will clearly indicate that the state has effectively prevented their misuse,” the Prime Minister concluded.
