January’s Annual Inflation Rate Marked 6.4%

Geostat, the national statistics service of Georgia, has published an updated report on inflation rate. Under the document, in January 2020, the overall price level in Georgia rose by 6.4%.

Price changes in commodity groups are as follows:

Food and soft drinks:

Prices rose by 11.3% with a 3.57% contribution to the annual inflation rate. Prices rose in the following subgroups: fruit and grapes (28.3%), milk, cheese and eggs (15%), meat and meat products (14.2%), fish products (12.4%), sugar, jams and other confectionaries (10.5%), oil and fat (8.1%), mineral and spring waters, soft drinks and natural juices (7.8%), vegetables and garden plants (7%), coffee, tea and cocoa 95.4%), bread and pastry (5.1%).

Strong drinks, tobacco: prices rose by 11.2% with a 0.76% contribution to the total annual inflation rate. Prices rose on tobacco products (up 20.3%) and strong drinks (up 3.4%).

Transport: the group recorded a 3.3% upturn with a 0.39% contribution to the inflation rate. Vehicle purchase tariffs rose by 4.2%, personal transport exploitation costs rose by 3.6% and transport services registered a 2.9% rise in prices.

According to Geostat, prices in the clothes and footwear group declined by 3.3%, while tariffs in the communication sector declined by 1.2%.
