Irrigation Water Now Reaches 165,000 Hectares of Farmland Across Georgia—With More to Come
On June 26, Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Davit Songulashvili visited the site of ongoing rehabilitation works on the main canal of the Khrami irrigation system in the Marneuli Municipality.
"To ensure the rational use of agricultural land in Eastern Georgia, it is crucial for farmers to have uninterrupted access to irrigation water. The government is implementing large-scale projects to develop a well-functioning land reclamation infrastructure. As a result, irrigation water is currently supplied to nearly 165,000 hectares of land nationwide, and this number is steadily increasing. I would also like to highlight that we are actively working on a program that will improve communication with water users and enhance service mechanisms," stated Minister Songulashvili.
The rehabilitation of the Khrami irrigation system’s main canal is being carried out by LLC “Georgia Melioration.” Once complete, the restored irrigation infrastructure will benefit 12 villages across the Bolnisi and Marneuli municipalities—Tsurta, Farizi, Qizilajlo, Tamarisi, Tsereteli, Sabirkendi, Algeti, Tazakendi, Azizkendi, Algeti Vineyard, Keshalo, Ambarovka, as well as adjacent areas around Marneuli city and several commercial facilities.
The completed works will improve irrigation for 4,075 hectares of agricultural land in the region, significantly boosting crop yields.
The total contract value of the project is ₾4.7 million, and completion is scheduled by the end of this year.
Currently, four irrigation infrastructure rehabilitation projects are underway in the Kvemo Kartli region. Upon completion, these efforts will enhance water delivery across approximately 10,065 hectares of agricultural land.
Minister Songulashvili was accompanied by Deputy Minister Kakha Kakabadze, Kvemo Kartli State Representative Levan Kharebava, Marneuli Mayor Kenan Omarov, Marneuli City Council Chairman Amiran Giorgadze, and Director General of “Georgia Melioration” Gigla Tamazashvili.
