Irrigation Sector Reform Presented to Lagodekhi Local Authorities
Ongoing reforms in Georgia’s melioration (irrigation) sector were presented to representatives of the local authorities in Lagodekhi.
The General Director of Georgian Amelioration, Gigla Tamazashvili, held an informational meeting with leaders of the Lagodekhi local self-government.
The meeting aimed to introduce the ongoing reforms in the irrigation sector, the preparation process for the upcoming irrigation season, and new approaches to cooperation with water users.
The General Director provided a detailed overview of the new irrigation tariff established by the Georgian National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission, as well as the current state subsidy scheme for this tariff, which is designed to support farmers.
Particular attention was paid to issues related to the approaching irrigation season, efficient water resource management, and the proper functioning of irrigation infrastructure.
It was noted that timely coordination and advance planning will significantly contribute to the equal and uninterrupted distribution of water, which is especially important during periods of intensive agricultural activity.
“To ensure uninterrupted access to irrigation water at the desired time, water users must conclude a water usage schedule agreement with Georgian Amelioration. This will guarantee the planned, balanced, and stable distribution of irrigation water. It is also important to note that water users will pay for the service only after receiving irrigation water,” said Gigla Tamazashvili.
Such meetings promote effective cooperation with local self-governments, ultimately supporting the sustainable development of the agricultural sector and better protection of farmers’ interests.
