Irrigation Infrastructure Modernization Project to Be Implemented in Kakheti
A major irrigation infrastructure modernization project will be implemented in Georgia’s Kakheti region, involving the rehabilitation and modernization of the left main canal of the Lower Samgori Irrigation System and its on-farm distribution networks. Upon completion, the project will provide reliable irrigation to 7,320 hectares of agricultural land.
The project was presented in the Sagarejo Municipality, where local government representatives and residents were briefed on the planned works and expected outcomes. The presentation was attended by Gigla Tamazashvili, Director General of Georgian Amelioration LLC, who spoke about ongoing reforms in the sector and emphasized the importance of such projects in expanding irrigated areas and improving the quality of water delivery.
The modernized distribution networks will enable more efficient use of water resources and improve access to irrigation water. Currently, irrigation services can be provided to 4,430 hectares of agricultural land. Following the completion of the project, this figure will increase to 7,320 hectares.
The installation of a pipeline-based distribution network will also facilitate the introduction of water metering systems and volumetric tariff mechanisms, contributing to more sustainable and efficient water management.
The project is being implemented under the Climate-Smart Irrigation Sector Development Program (CSISDP), with financial support from the Asian Development Bank and co-financing from the Government of Georgia and a grant program of the European Commission.
The initiative is expected to strengthen agricultural productivity in the region, improve water management practices, and enhance the resilience of the agricultural sector to climate-related challenges.
