Georgia’s Power Generation in HPPs Shrinks, Imports Grow

Power generation at Georgia-based hydropower plants has shrunk. According to the ESCO indicators, in January-July 2020, Georgia-based HPPs generated 5.3 billion kw/h electricity, down 7.7% compared to 2019.

The decreased power generation was balanced by imports. In 2019, Georgia’s electricity imports constituted 716millon kw/h, while the figure rose to 788 million kw/h in 2020.

As a rule, electricity generated by HPPs is exported to neighboring countries in the spring-summer season; however, exports have also declined as a result of declining generation.

Georgia’s total exports of electricity in 2020 reached 149 million kw/h, down 38% year on year.
