Georgia’s HPP Generation Declined by 9.2% in 2019
The Georgian power sector recorded a contraction in domestic power generation in 2019. Namely, domestic generation of Georgia-based hydro power plants (HPPs) declined by 9.2% in January-November 2019, compared to the same period of 2018.
According to the Galt & Taggart report, changing hydrological conditions have decreased the power generation in 2019. This signifies the annual volume of precipitation has declined and HPPs have received smaller volume of water resources.
Consequently, domestic generation constituted 68.4% in total consumption in 2019, while the figure was 74.3% in 2018.
Decreased generation has increased Georgia’s dependence on imports and steam power plants.
According to Galt & Taggart, steam power plants’ generation rose by 29% in 2019, imports volume rose y 10.5%. As a result, the country has consumed more expensive electricity compared to 2018.
