Georgian Government to Finance Overseas Oncology Treatment for Children

The Georgian government, led by Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili, held a meeting where they deliberated over five key agenda items, including a crucial project focused on pediatric oncology.

The project aims to provide state-funded medical support to children diagnosed with cancer, facilitating their diagnostic procedures and treatments not only within Georgia but also in advanced clinics in Turkey, Israel, and Spain. The initiative commands an annual budget of roughly 30 million GEL.

Based on the government's press release, the chosen service providers overseas have been carefully selected based on preliminary market research. These high-tech clinics uphold modern standards and hold international accreditation, offering a comprehensive range of services under one roof.

The project will enable patients to access top-tier, technologically advanced medical services, including proton therapy, a groundbreaking treatment for certain types of solid tumors. The importance of availing high-quality oncology services, particularly for children, was stressed during the meeting, underscoring it as a state priority.

According to the administration, agreements between the Ministry of Health and the medical institutions involved are expected to be finalized by the end of the month. This will pave the way for children diagnosed with cancer to receive medical care in Georgia and, if necessary, abroad in Spain, Israel, and Turkey.

The government's announcement further stated that this overseas treatment program for patients under 18 years is a transitional stage. It will continue until Georgia strengthens its local services and establishes a state-of-the-art pediatric oncology center, equipped with high-tech machinery and conforming to modern standards. The Ministry of Health is reportedly taking active steps towards this goal.
