Georgian Dream Withdraws Support for Controversial Bill After Massive Protests
Statement by Georgian Dream party:
"We want to inform the public that the political council of Georgian Dream, together with People's Power and the parliamentary majority, held consultations regarding the ongoing political debates surrounding the Transparency of 'Foreign Influence' law.
We acknowledge that the proposed legislation has generated divergent opinions within the society. The false and misleading allegations that it was a "Russian law" and a departure from the European course have tarnished its image and misled some segments of the public.
Moreover, some radical groups have instigated unlawful actions, which we condemn. We commend the heroic response of law enforcement officers, who have maintained order with patience and professionalism.
We believe that our priority should be to promote peace, stability, and economic development in our country and advance Georgia's integration with Europe. We must channel our efforts towards constructive dialogue and nation-building, rather than polarization and confrontation.
Therefore, as a responsible governing party accountable to every citizen, we have decided to withdraw our support for the bill without any reservations.
Once emotions have subsided, we will provide a clear and factual account of what the legislation aimed to achieve and why transparency of foreign influence is crucial for our country's welfare. We will engage in open meetings with the public and dispel any misunderstandings or misrepresentations.
We assume our special responsibility as a governing power to serve the best interests of all members of society.
Georgia will continue to uphold peace, stability, and dignity, as we pursue our European aspirations, which reflect the genuine aspirations of the Georgian people".
