Georgia Presents Environmental Protection Progress at Meeting with the Ramsar Convention Secretariat

A working meeting was held in Gland, Switzerland, between the Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) and the Georgian delegation.

The meeting was attended by the Secretary General of the Ramsar Convention, Dr. Musonda Mumba; Senior Regional Advisor for Europe, Flor Lafaye de Micheaux; Georgia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva, Revaz Lominadze; and Head of the Biodiversity Policy Department of Georgia’s Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Lika Giorgadze. Representatives of the Ramsar Convention Secretariat also participated in the meeting.

During the discussions, the parties reviewed ongoing areas of cooperation and identified future priorities. The Georgian side once again reaffirmed the country’s strong commitment to the protection and sustainable management of wetland ecosystems.

Particular emphasis was placed on Georgia’s progress in expanding its network of protected areas and strengthening biodiversity conservation policies, as well as ongoing reforms in water resource management aimed at aligning national practices with European Union standards.

For her part, Secretary General Dr. Musonda Mumba positively assessed Georgia’s efforts in developing its biodiversity strategy and advancing reforms related to water resource management and wetland conservation. She also expressed the Secretariat’s readiness to continue supporting the country in these areas.

The parties also held detailed discussions regarding issues related to the boundaries of wetlands located within Kolkheti National Park. The Georgian delegation reaffirmed its willingness to work through constructive dialogue and close cooperation with the Ramsar Convention Secretariat to reach a mutually acceptable solution concerning the wetland boundaries within the park.

The meeting underscored Georgia’s ongoing commitment to international environmental cooperation and the protection of its unique natural ecosystems.
