Georgia Adopts Key Laws to Harmonise Country's Energy Sector

Following the Parliament’s adoption in third reading of the Law on Energy and Water Supply and the Law on Renewable Energy Sources, Georgia has laid down the foundation to reform its energy sector in line with the Energy Community Treaty and European energy law.

The Law on Energy and Water Supply will launch the development of an independent, competitive and liquid market, including, inter alia, via the unbundling and certification of transmission and distribution system operators. The law was prepared with the support of the Energy Community Secretariat.

The Renewables Law sets the national target for renewable energy at 35% of total final consumption by 2030. The new legislation requires that support schemes are evaluated using competition and/or state aid regulatory norms.

The laws will enter into force following their signature by the President of Georgia and publication in the official journal.
