GABA: Radical Changes are Required in Agribusiness Sector

The Georgian Agro Business Association (GABA) reveals current challenges in the agricultural sector and stresses that radical changes are required in the field.

The recent measures in the sector have boosted export production and reduced the negative trade balance of agricultural products; the state program have increased investments, but many other challenges remain relevant, GABA representatives noted.

The lack of knowledge-based solutions is one of the key problems, GABA members assert and reveal the following challenges: low concentration of land resources and low indicator of land cultivation, invaluable cooperation; inactivity of the existing cooperative companies; invaluable the production and distribution chain; the insufficient level of added value; low productivity of working and a deficit of qualified personnel, shortage of seed and plant materials; the insufficient quantity of modern machines; deficit of irrigation water, an unorganized form of supply and unreasonable consumption.

“The current situation requires radical changes, because the developed agricultural sector, the modern-standard food industry, the highly-productive agrarian sector is an inseparable part of sustainable and inclusive development of the country”, GABA first vice president Irakli Chikava noted. Founded don October 2, 2020, for developing the Georgian agricultural sector, the Georgian Agro Business Association (GABA) has already started uniting major representatives of the field.

The key objective of the association is to involve major business companies in the agricultural sector. The recently established association unites major agricultural players, cooperative companies, investment funds, financial institutions, consulting companies, associations, scientific and educational facilities.
