FAO Expert Team Arrives in Georgia to Support the Development of the National Land Consolidation Strategy and Action Plan
A group of international experts from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has arrived in Georgia to support the process of developing the country’s National Land Consolidation Strategy and Action Plan.
The experts met in a working format with Giorgi Misheladze, Chairman of the National Agency for Sustainable Land Management and Land Use Monitoring. The meeting was also attended by representatives of the relevant departments of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture and members of the Project Implementation Unit (PIU).
The parties discussed the strategic directions and work plan for land consolidation.
The expert group also held a meeting with specialists of the National Agency for Sustainable Land Management and Land Use Monitoring, where the working version of the National Land Consolidation Strategy document and the format of cooperation were reviewed. It was emphasized that the Agency will play a key role in the implementation of land consolidation.
At the initial stage, the plan includes drafting the National Land Consolidation Strategy, assessing the current legal framework, selecting pilot areas, and carrying out other key preparatory activities.
Land consolidation is a state-organized procedure that, through agreement with landowners and land users, allows the exchange or redistribution of fragmented rural land parcels in a way that reduces land fragmentation. This contributes to strengthening farm operations, promoting the efficient use of land resources, and achieving public goals such as ecosystem restoration and infrastructure development.
The project is being implemented within the framework of the World Bank–funded programme “Georgia Resilient Agriculture, Irrigation, and Land Project” (GRAIL).
