FAO Expert Assesses Georgia’s Aquaculture Laboratory Capacity
To assess laboratory capabilities in the field of aquaculture and identify sector-specific needs, the State Laboratory of Agriculture hosted Benoît Glaude, an expert from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
The visit aimed to evaluate the existing laboratory infrastructure, diagnostic capacities, and ongoing research activities supporting Georgia’s aquaculture sector, as well as to assess their compliance with current European Union standards.
“During the visit, the FAO expert held working meetings and interviews with our specialists to evaluate the laboratory’s compliance with EU standards in the field of aquaculture. Existing needs were identified, and key priorities for a future action plan were defined. This cooperation represents an important step toward strengthening food safety systems in Georgia’s aquaculture sector, improving laboratory capacities, and introducing modern international standards,” said Anna Gulbani, Deputy Director of the State Laboratory of Agriculture.
The findings and recommendations resulting from the assessment are expected to support the development of future cooperation initiatives and laboratory improvement plans. These efforts aim to enhance the effectiveness of Georgia’s aquaculture sector and further strengthen the country’s food safety system.
