The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Davit Songulashvili, met with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative in Georgia, Douglas Webb. During the meeting, the parties discussed ongoing programs, future cooperation priorities, and joint initiatives in the environmental and agricultural sectors.
One of the main topics of discussion was the expansion of protected areas and support for their development. The parties reviewed opportunities for financing from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), which would support biodiversity protection and the establishment of new protected areas.
“This year, two new protected areas will be established in Georgia, which will require strengthening relevant infrastructure and administrative capacities. International support will be important for the development of these new protected areas. It is noteworthy that the legislative framework is already prepared, and we will soon present a comprehensive proposal to the Government,” stated Davit Songulashvili.
The parties also discussed cooperation in sustainable rural development, including programs related to agriculture, irrigation, and land use. Particular attention was given to the integration of innovative technologies and information systems.
Ongoing and planned initiatives related to forest fire management were also discussed, particularly those linked to climate change mitigation efforts.
Special emphasis was placed on waste management issues, including the reduction and recycling of plastic, electronic, and tourism-related waste. According to the Minister, reducing plastic use remains one of the Ministry’s key priorities.
Douglas Webb highlighted the importance of joint cooperation, noting that coordinated efforts enable the effective mobilization of resources and support for priority areas.
“We have an agreed and clear vision, which creates the foundation to work on issues such as mobilizing funds and resources and supporting your priorities,” said the UNDP Resident Representative.
The meeting was attended by First Deputy Minister Nino Tandilashvili, Deputy Minister Zurab Ezugbaia, and UNDP Head of Environment and Energy Nino Antadze.
