David Songulashvili Meets with Wheat Farmers in Dedoplistskaro to Discuss Sector Growth and Support Measures
Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture David Songulashvili, along with the Chairman of the Agrarian Issues Committee Gela Samkharauli, State Representative in the Kakheti Region Giorgi Aladashvili, and Deputy Minister Lasha Dolidze, visited the grain drying facility of farmer Nugzar Alugishvili in Dedoplistskaro and met with wheat farmers.
Using preferential agrocredit, the farmer established infrastructure with a storage capacity exceeding 20,000 tons. The total loan amount surpassed 1.4 million GEL, with 300,000 GEL provided through state co-financing.
During the meeting, Minister Songulashvili highlighted the positive growth trend in wheat production across the country. He emphasized that the state’s objective is to support farmers in achieving higher yields and improved productivity. He also noted that mandatory wheat certification has been in place for several years, providing farmers with access to quality seed material—an essential component for boosting yields, improving competitiveness, and attracting investment.
The Minister also addressed the issue of agricultural equipment, pointing out that in recent years, farmers have faced no significant challenges in this area due to state co-financing for the purchase of dozens of combines.
Additionally, the Minister discussed the introduction of new wheat varieties. These varieties are distinguished by their high yield potential, disease resistance, and favorable agronomic characteristics. They are currently undergoing trials in different regions and climatic zones, with the goal of identifying and distributing the best-performing varieties tailored to each area.
Under the “Preferential Agrocredit” program, the state has raised the maximum loan limit for the care and cultivation of grain crops from 100,000 to 300,000 GEL. Preferential loans cover all stages of annual crop production, including the purchase of seed and planting materials, fertilizers, and biological plant protection products. Eligible expenses also include labor, agricultural machinery rental, and fuel.
