AYFB: Economy Ministry Should Release Official Statement on Enguri HPP Electricity Distribution to Secessionist Abkhazia
Association of Young Financiers and Businessmen (AYFB) urges the Economy Ministry of Georgia to release an official statement on how Enguri HPP electricity will be distributed to Russia-occupied Abkhazia after Enguri HHP rehabilitation.
The Ministry of Economy should demonstrate an official position whether the 60/40 distribution of Enguri HPP electricity is retained with secessionist Abkhazia. Under this agreement, 40% of Enguri HPP electricity must be supplied to Sokhumi and 60% must go to Tbilisi, AYFB says.
The constantly growing electricity tariffs negatively affect the population of Georgia, as well as the current environment. On the other hand, electricity consumption in Russia-occupied Abkhazia has been enormously growing over the past 3 years because of cryptocurrency mining farms. Furthermore, in 2020 and 2021, the so-called mobile mining farmers were also delivered from Russian to Abkhazia. Apparently, 70% of Tbilisi-supplied electricity in Abkhazia is consumed by cryptocurrency mining farms.
If the Government of Georgia manages to maintain the 60/40 distribution regime, in May-August Georgia’s electricity consumption will be balanced thanks to Enguri HPP and Vadnrili HPP generation, the AYFB statement reads.
