An attempt to register 4,891 sq.m of land occupied by a windbreak in Karaleti was thwarted after the Gori District Court rejected an individual's ownership claim. The decision was based on evidence provided by the National Agency for Sustainable Land Management and Land Use Monitoring, according to information released by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture.
An on-site inspection confirmed recent illegal activity in the area, including the uprooting and cutting down of trees and vegetation in the windbreak. Machinery had been used to clear the land.
As a result of the identified violations, the case materials were forwarded to the Department of Environmental Supervision and the Investigation Service of the Ministry of Finance. The violator has been fined 46,288 GEL in compensation for environmental damage.
The National Agency for Sustainable Land Management and Land Use Monitoring has been conducting an inventory of windbreak (field protection) strips since 2021. The aim of the program is to identify and register windbreaks as state property through archival research and field analysis. The inventory is scheduled to be completed by January 1, 2027. In the next phase, efforts will focus on restoring damaged windbreaks, planting new ones, and ensuring their protection.
