Agriculture Minister Expects $100 million Hazelnut Harvest in 2020
“This year we expect an abundant harvest of high-quality hazelnut”, Georgian Agriculture Minister Levan Davitashvili noted when meeting with hazelnut growers together with Samegrelo Region Governor Aleksandre Motserelia and executive director of the Association of hazelnut Growers Giorgi Todua in Kobi. At the meeting the parties discussed the 2020 harvest volume and quality, storing and exports issues.
“Over the past few years, the hazelnut-growing sector is facing major challenges. Thanks to coordinated job of the Government and farmers, these difficulties have been overcome. We can boldly say that the 2020 harvest will be exceptionally good in terms of volume and quality. According to the 2020 tendencies on international markets, hazelnut will be sold at the highest price. Consequently, the 2020-2021 season will be financially successful for farmers. Harvesting will start in several days. We should pay due attention and we should hold the final treatment with a full responsibility, complying with the determined protocol. The hazelnut sector is able to play an important role in our economy. We expect the harvest value will exceed 100 million USD and we will pick about 55,000 tons of hazelnut”, Levan Davitashvili noted.
On his turn, Samegrelo Region Governor Aleksandre Motserelia noted that the Georgian hazelnut will regain its old position on EU markets thanks to its quality and competitive capacity.
