A working meeting was held on climate change and agro-economic assessment
A working meeting-seminar was organised by the Agricultural Scientific-Research Centre of Georgia together with the United Nations Development Programme, under the project component “Agricultural-Economic Assessment of Adaptation and Mitigation Measures for Climate Change in Georgia”, which is part of the larger initiative “Expansion of the Early Warning System of Multidimensional Hazards and Use of Climate-Related Information in Georgia”.
International experts — Professors Tim Hess and Joe Morris — together with local project consultants presented the results of future climate change scenario assessments for various agricultural crops, including apples, grapes, tomatoes, wheat, potatoes and others. The analysis was carried out using modern modelling software (AquaCrop).
The meeting also discussed cost-benefit analyses of measures aimed at reducing drought-related damage, such as irrigation, windbreaks, mulching and similar interventions. Participants reviewed the foundations of the agro-economic methodology, modelled results for target crops, and preliminary GIS-based maps showing projected losses and damages.
The event was attended by specialists from the Agricultural Scientific-Research Centre, representatives of relevant departments of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, and experts from the National Environment Agency.
During the session, an active discussion was held on how the proposed methodological tools could be applied in practice, the importance of launching targeted research in this direction, and the necessity of preparing qualified specialists.
The project aims to support the sustainable development of agriculture and to help the country create effective strategies for adapting to climate change.
