STUDIO9 Restaurant Project "Tsiskvili'' Nominated for Mies Van der Rohe Prize
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was one of the most influential architects of the 20th century and is also considered to be the founder of modernist architecture. The foundation named after him was founded in Barcelona in 1983 and in recent years has been awarding a special prize in the field of modern architecture. The award is given once every two years to the best modern European architecture projects, recently we often see Georgian projects in the nominations.
Among this year's nominations is another Georgian architectural project, STUDIO9 restaurant - "Tsiskvili", located on Beliashvili Street in Tbilisi. Since jury members can't meet in a pandemic, the 2021 Awards will be held in May 2022 in Barcelona.
The project covers 4825 square meters and its 18-year construction was completed in 2020. As the architects point out, they adapted their concept to the waterfall located in the project area. The starting point for such a creative solution was the coastal landscape. Ethno Museum-Restaurant, a multifunctional complex for recreation, entertainment and public catering, is located along a large section of the river.
The building has an inner courtyard, which combines various buildings of small settlement type: beer square, beer hall, wine yard, wine hall, ethno hall, water mill, artist's workshop-restaurant, barbecue house, bread house and cellar.
This museum-restaurant is a kind of history conveyed in the language of architecture. Along with modern materials, the project also uses traditional details, which are fragments and materials found in different parts of Georgia: brick, tile, stone, wood. The materials have retained their original appearance.
Modern materials also used in the project - metal, facade facing materials, large stained glass windows and metal trusses; In construction, stone material extracted from the river bank. The aim of the author of the project was to create a tourist center on a rather difficult project area by accurately understanding the appearance, scale, proportion and structure, combining the old and the new.
