Mariam Kapanadze Animation - "Abandoned Village" Wins Award at Hokkaido International Animated Film Festival

Georgian film director Mariam Kapanadze's animated film "Abandoned Village" is assessed by Japanese film critics and viewers as follows: "It was a really ambitious and aesthetically beautiful work."

Recently, the short animation, which was created with the support of Studio Kvali XXI, Georgian Film Abkhazia Film Center and Georgian National Film Center, received an award from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan at the Hokkaido International Animated Film Festival. It is noteworthy that more than 2000 films were submitted to the festival. The work of the Georgian director was among the 90s.

This animation is a debut for film director Mariam Kapanadze and artist Irakli Toklikishvili. "I had not worked on animation so far. I have been in the Shadow Theater for 7 years now and it is during mastering the art of shadows that I take the first steps towards animation, ”says Mariam.

Scratching technique was used to create the animation, which takes quite a long time and in total, the film was created in 3 years. It should be noted that the animator - Elene Murjikneli shared her knowledge of scratching techniques with other members of the group. After that, the animators revived the pictures of the rural landscape.

It is noteworthy that many opinions have been expressed on the ideological side of the film. For some, the abandoned village symbolizes our present reality - villages emptied of people, which seemingly are slowly losing their lives. However, Mariam Kapanadze explains the main idea of the animation as follows - "The main character of the film is an abandoned village, which is a metaphor of a human being. A person who has forgotten the sense of creation of the world - love… this is our world that was destroyed by lovelessness. "
